I have 7 days to move 3 websites off this server onto a different server, all in a quest to save $17.90.
4 months ago I moved most of my sites to a different web host. I left a few here, partly out of laziness, but 1 because I didn't have access to change the DNS to the new server. 3 weeks ago, I was able to update the DNS. Now I can move the last of the sites away (and save $17.90!).
I can't just move this site. This is the perfect opportunity to redesign, cull the dead weight, make something new. But I've got a week. And 2 other sites belonging to other people. Maybe I'll update this site in phases. Blog facelift one week, DVD update the next. I'll have to think about that.
With all of that said, nothing will be happening here the rest of Black History Month. In fact, there's a good chance I'll miss any mail that may come my way since there's no telling when I'll get mail addresses set up. But soon I'll be spreading my work fresh upon the interweb once again!
Above is the esteemed Dr Blondie. Despite knowing Jerry and myself for 20 years now (dear sweet jeebus it just hit me that it really has been 20 years) she is neither a nerd nor a dork. She is socially adept, can carry on an enlightened conversation with people from all walks of life, and does not live in her parents basement.
There are no pictures of me with Darth Vader and a Snowtrooper. Not that I wouldn't want one, I've just never been in a place where there was a Darth Vader, a Snowtrooper, and a camera. I've got 47 Stormtroopers sitting on a shelf (proof of my nerd commitment), but I've yet to be seen in public with Darth Vader OR a Snowtrooper.
If I hadn't been thanked in her doctoral thesis, I might be a little bitter towards Dr Blondie. But if I see a pic of her with a Wookie and a Jawa, I can't be held responsible for my actions.
Last week the gang had game night at Stately Ford Manor. After gaming, we played with the camera and effects on Keith's Mac.
We're a goofy bunch. We had to have played around with that camera and acting goofy for at least an hour.
Then Keith finally kicked us out.
I've had a couple of books sitting at my bedside for a couple of months that I've been trying to find time to read. I got sidetracked last month when my close personal first tier associate, Evil Mathias, loaned me his copy of wrestler Chris Jericho's biography. I've read most wrestler bios that have been published over the last decade, and this one ranked among the best.
But there were still those two books at my bedside. Fiction. It's been while since I read any fiction that I really enjoyed. The first book was To The Stars by L. Ron Hubbard. L. Ron gets a lot of flack for the whole Scientology thing, but he's written a few of my favorite books (Battlefield Earth, the Mission Earth series). A couple of his books released posthumously I've enjoyed, so I picked this one up hoping I would like it.
After 20 pages, I found I wasn't in the mood for what turned out to be 50 year old science fiction. Hubbard can come across as preachy in his writing at times, and this was evident to me in those first few pages. Too much "class" structure in the makeup of society, too stereotypical character development (primarily evident in the drunkard ship's doctor with a god complex). Reluctantly, I returned the book to the shelf and picked up the next one.
The next one is Orson Scott Card's "Empire". I knew nothing of the story - I generally like Card's science fiction. He writes both science fiction and fantasy, but I'm one of the few who enjoys the science but avoids fantasy like the plague. I feel cheated when our heroes come to an obstacle but defeat it with a magic hocus pocus pulled from a bag of etherealness, but have them defeat it with a techno thingy pulled from a crate of thechnobabble and I'm happy. The cover of "Empire" had tanks and guns, so I thought I was good in avoiding the fantasy.
But "Empire", after 60 pages, isn't science fiction. So far, it's more of a military/political intrigue story along the lines of what I would think of Tom Clancy. This isn't bad, though. I'm enjoying the book. Its pacing, the characters, the story - it's one of those books I don't want to put down. 60 pages may not sound like "can't put down", but I'm a slow reader and those 60 pages constitute about 2 hours since I read every word and imagine the story developing as I read along.
This book has been a nice little surprise. I'll see if it keeps up with my new found expectations.
Just a quick update today. After interviewing for Keith's old job it turns out my lack of long term managerial experience has worked against me and I didn't get the job. Fortunately I showed a lot of promise in the 2 months I wound up filling in, so I'm now on track to get some managerial training.
Now I can go back under the radar and write code once again. That's the bright side I keep telling myself about. With the way things are looking to go the next couple of weeks, as well as the last couple, under-radar coding isn't that bad of a prospect.
As always, correct spelling is optional in any blog entry. Keep in mind that any links more than a year old may not be active, especially the ones pointing back to Russellmania (I like to move things around!).
Tags have been added to posts back to 2005. There may be an occasional old blog that gets added to the tag list, but in reality what could be noteworthy from that far back?
